Formula Regional European Championship gains two new teams

by Ida Wood

Two new teams will join the Formula Regional European Championship grid for the championship’s second season in 2020.

Successful Italian squad Cram Motorsport has tied up with Maestro Motorsport to form Team Maestro by Cram, which will run an unspecified number of cars.

Cram, started in the 1990s by and still run by Gabriele Rosei and his brother Simone, has raced in everything from Formula V8 3.5 down to Formula 4 and its Italian predecessor Formula Abarth.

It still competes in Italian F4 today, and its FREC debut will mark its first time racing in Formula 3 since the 2001 German F3 season.

Egor Nazarov, who worked at Russian F3 chassis manufacturer and team Artline Engineering when it made a shortlived appearance in FIA European F3 in 2015, fronts the Maestro Motorsport side of the new alliance.

The second new team is Gillian Track Events from France, which will run French F4 race-winner Gillian Henrion.

Henrion made his single-seater debut in a guest French F4 appearance at home track Paul Ricard at the end of 2018, and returned to the championship full-time last year.

The 16-year-old finished fourth in the FIA standings with one win at the Hungaroring and four other podiums.

Prior to single-seaters, he was the French Cadet kart champion and a regular in international competitions. His best result was second place in the OK-Junior classification of the 2017 WSK Champions Cup.

Reigning champion team Prema has already signed Ferrari juniors Arthur Leclerc and Gianluca Petecof for the upcoming FREC season, and its rivals DR Formula and US Racing are also confirmed to return to the championship.
