Victor Martins won the opening Formula Renault Eurocup race at the Hungaroring, but will only be awarded half points as the entire three-lap race was run behind the safety car.
The race began behind the safety car due to treacherous weather conditions, in which championship leader Oscar Piastri, Brad Benavides and Ugo de Wilde spun off on the sighting lap.
The field ran under yellow flags for three laps but, as conditions worsened, the race was red flagged with 18 minutes on the clock. It would not be restarted.
MP Motorsport’s Martins, who took pole, stayed on track to take the race win, ahead of R-ace GP’s Alexander Smolyar and his own team-mate Lorenzo Colombo.
After the spin, R-ace GP’s Piastri was unable to start the race, but Martins could only close the gap to his title rival by 12.5 points, as half points were awarded.
The third R-ace GP car of Caio Collet finished fourth, ahead of MP’s Amaury Cordeel and the Arden trio of Frank Bird, Patrik Pasma and Alex Quinn. Global Racing Service’s Xavier Lloveras and JD Motorsport’s Leonardo Lorandi rounded out the top 10.
