British racer Tom Blomqvist topped the opening qualifying session of the 2014 FIA European F3 season at Silverstone.
The Jagonya Ayam with Carlin driver went 0.002s quicker than Prema rookie Esteban Ocon with six minutes remaining in the session to take his first pole position in FIA F3.
Ocon came close to taking the top spot back on a couple of occasions, lapping within a tenth of the benchmark lap but ultimately settling for second.
While nobody interfered in the duo’s dominance, another Prema rookie Antonio Fuoco came very close to fighting for the top spot, ending up just o.05s off in third. Meanwhile, karting graduate Max Verstappen completed an all-newcomer front row, making it 0.075s between the top four with a last-second flying lap.
Team West-Tec’s Felix Serralles took fifth, ahead of Carlin duo of Jordan King and Ed Jones. Nicholas Latifi led Prema teammate Dennis van de Laar in eighth, while top Mucke man Lucas Auer rounded out the top ten.
The second qualifying session, which takes several hours after the first one, will determine grids for R2 and R3.
