Estonian Martin Rump has claimed a surprise victory in Formula Renault 1.6 race two at Zolder, having lined up on the grid in last after not being present for qualifying.

With eight runners in total, Rump managed an impressive first lap to take P4 and, on lap three, then settled into third, overtaking Patricio O’Ward.

While second-placed Janneau Esmeijer putting pressure on poleman Roy Geerts, Rump found himself shadowing the duo. His opportunity to pass came in the final laps and, in a dramatic finish, Rump took advantage of the fight for the lead in the final sector of the final lap, snatching away the lead and taking the checkered flag.

Having lost the win, Geerts held on to second, narrowly keeping Esmeijer at bay. O’Ward rounded out the top four, just three second behind the winner.

Tommy van Erp finished fifth, ahead of front row starter Larry ten Voorde, who lost several positions over the opening lap. Yaro Deckers and Paul Sieljes rounded out the field.
