Recently-crowned MRF Challenge champion Harrison Newey will continue with Van Amersfoort Racing in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship.

The son of Red Bull Formula 1 technical guru Adrian Newey finished 18th in the standings in his rookie F3 season last year, taking a best finish of sixth at Spa-Francorchamps.

He had stepped up to F3 with VAR after racing in ADAC Formula 4 with the Dutch squad in his first full year of car racing in 2015, when he also came?second in the BRDC F4 series.

Earlier this month he defeated his new F3 team-mate Joey Mawson to win the MRF Challenge at the final round in Chennai.

“As a racing driver you want to be able to perform at the highest level,” said Newey.

“Frits [van Amersfoort] and his team has proven to be one of the best teams in Formula 3.

“The atmosphere at VAR has helped me a great deal to become a better racing driver.

“I have no doubt our partnership will lead to new highlights. My goal is to be on the podium as soon as possible.”

Newey joins Mawson, Pedro Piquet and David Beckmann in VAR’s F3 line-up for 2017.

“Harrison showed continued improvement throughout last season,” said team boss van Amersfoort.

“As a long time member of the VAR family it is big benefit for both Harrison and the team that we know each other so well.

“We are highly motivated to lift his performances to the next level.

“All lights are on green for a successful new chapter in the collaboration between the Newey family and Van Amersfoort Racing.”
