Max Fewtrell makes it a double pole at Eurocup opener

Fewtrell

Max Fewtrell saw off the challenge of rookie team-mates Logan Sargeant and Victor Martins to make it a double pole position at the first round of the Formula Renault Eurocup season at Paul Ricard.

The two groups went in the opposite order to Friday night’s first qualifying session, with Sargeant topping the first group by 0.027 seconds over Yifei Ye.

The American’s time of 2m02.908s was soon beaten by fellow R-ace GP driver Fewtrell in the second group, but the Briton still faced a challenge for pole from fellow Renault protege Martins, who went ahead with just a few minutes remaining.

Fewtrell was able to respond with a 2m02.456s to claim pole for Saturday afternoon’s season-opening race, with Martins failing to improve his time on his next lap despite going quicker than anybody in sector one.

As in the first session, rookies Christian Lundgaard and Oscar Piastri both came third in their group to claim fifth and sixth on the grid respectively for MP Motorsport and Arden.

Alexander Smolyar and Lorenzo Colombo both improved to make it into the top eight, with Richard Verschoor ending up ninth on the grid once again.

This time the Dutchman will be joined by his former team-mate Neil Verhagen, who improved upon the 16th place he claimed in first qualifying to take 10th this time around.

Series veteran Max Defourny was the big absentee from the top 10, only managing seventh in the first group and therefore landing 14th on the grid for the first race of the season.
