Chinese kart racer Guanyu Zhou has joined the ranks of the Ferrari Driver Academy.

The 15-year-old won the European and British titles in the Rotax Max Junior class in 2013, having moved from China to the UK the previous year.

The agreement for Zhou to join the Maranello squad was announced at a press conference at the Shanghai International Circuit on Sunday at the Ferrari Racing Days event.

“The decision to take on Guanyu was based on confidence in his obvious talent, as well as being part of a collaboration with the Chinese Automobile Federation, which for the past few years has already been sending a young driver that it has chosen, over to Italy for a two day training programme, both in a simulator and on track at the wheel of a Formula 3 car,” said Ferrari.

Zhou joins the FDA, run by Luca Baldisserri, “with the ultimate goal of making it all the way to Formula 1”.

He joins Jules Bianchi, Raffaele Marciello, Antonio Fuoco and Lance Stroll on the FDA’s books.
