Fabio Leimer was on top in GP2 practice on a wet but drying track at Silverstone.
The Racing Engineering driver, who took pole in the wet at the British circuit last year, spent much of the session in P1 and finished with a time of 1m57.996s.
Robin Frijns was second for Hilmer Motorsport, 0.434s adrift of Leimer and just ahead of home favourite James Calado.
Leimer’s team-mate Julian Leal went fourth with an improvement after the chequered flag, demoting Daniel De Jong who impressed throughout with his pace in the difficult conditions.
Stephane Richelmi beat DAMS team-mate Marcus Ericsson to sixth place. Felipe Nasr was eighth, with Tom Dillmann and Mitch Evans completing the top ten.
Championship leader Stefano Coletti looked at sea in the conditions, surviving an off-track moment but finishing the 30 minute session last of the 26 runners, 3.3 seconds off the pace.
