The FIA F3 series kicked off earlier in the month and will conclude in September at Sochi, with Abu Dhabi left off the calendar. Macau will take place as-ever in November, as its own separate non-championship round.
The new car is more powerful than its predecessor, which led to speculation over the winter that it would be unsuitable for the Macau track. A statement said “details regarding implementation were still under discussion.”
Alternatives could include restricting the power of the new cars, sticking with the previous-gen Dallara F3 car – used in such championships as Euroformula Open – or even using the FIA’s new less-powerful F3 Regional car.
“It is expected that the majority of the grid for Macau will be made up of FIA Formula 3 Championship drivers,” said a statement from Macau organisers.
Thirty drivers from 10 teams started the FIA F3 season – the only championship using the machinery that would be deployed in the Macau Grand Prix.
It is unclear whether any teams from outside of the series – such as 2017/’18 Macau winner Motopark – would be able to take part in the race, although they may have the option to collaborate with an existing FIA F3 outfit.
