After extensive testing in Formula 3-level machinery over the winter, Zdenek Chovanec will make his category debut at the start of next year in Asian F3, driving for BlackArts Racing.
The Venezuelan-born Czech, who has links to the Bhaitech team he raced for in Italian Formula 4 this year, started karting in 2018 and raced in the Portguese national championship before progressing into single-seaters.
His first car racing experience was in F4 United Arab Emirates at the start of 2020, and he finished seventh in the points with two podiums. The came circuits will appear in the entirely UAE-based 2021 Asian F3 season.
“I’m super excited to race in the Asian Formula 3 series with BlackArts Racing,” said Chovanec.
“I am sure we will improve a lot during this season and gain a lot of experience.”
He is the second driver to be revealed for the series after Hitech GP’s Reece Ushijima, although Formula Scout understands at least 17 drivers are now signed up to race.
“BlackArts Racing is dedicated to the development of young drivers. Zdenek is a bright young prospect, on a fast track to success in formula cars,” said BlackArts team principal Bill O’Brien.
“He fits well into our programme. We are happy to have him as one of our talented young drivers in the 2021 FIA F3 Asian Championship.”
During the off-season the Hong Kong-based outift, which won the 2019-20 Asian F3 title with Joey Alders, signed former Formula 1 driver Alex Yoong as its team manager.
“After a year spent doing all our coaching online and in simulators, it’s great to be heading to the track for proper racing and coaching,” Yoong admitted. “Zdenek is a rising star and we can’t wait to get started on track.”
