Ross Martin extends National FF1600 lead with Anglesey win

by Alasdair Lindsay

Ross Martin took a commanding win in the second BRSCC National Formula Ford 1600 race at Anglesey, pulling away from sparring Cliff Dempsey Racing team-mates James Clarke and Spike Kohlbecker.

Setting a fastest lap half a second faster than anyone else?s best, the Team Dolan driver was unchallenged from the start.

Any hope Kohlbecker had of battling for victory from the front row was quashed in the second half of the race by his own team-mate, having to defend from Clarke.

Clarke had a poor start, being passed by B-M Racing’s Rory Smith for third on the run up the hill towards Rocket.

But when Smith came to a halt at The Banking a couple of laps later, he was able to close in on Kohlbecker, and with two laps to go, swept past the American driver through Rocket.

Kevin Mills Racing’s Neil Maclennan started 11th, but was swift in his progress, scything through the field and finishing fourth after Smith’s retirement.

Dave and Tom McArthur finished fifth and sixth for B-M Racing, the latter picking his way from 16th on the grid.

Brendon Leigh also came from the back row to finish seventh, aided by Border Reivers’?Jamie Thorburn struggling to keep his midfield rivals behind.

Michael Macpherson finished eighth but was initially ahead of his KMR team-mate Leigh, with Jamie Sharp seizing an opportunity at the first corner when Macpherson took the outside line when battling Leigh for position.

Sharp was set for a top eight finish but lost power exiting The Banking on the last lap and fell to 14th after pulling into the pitlane.

Aaron Jeansonne, who had his best finish of the season in eighth place in race one, had targeted holding position to put him in contention for reverse grid pole. Such was the pace of the Maclennan, Tom McArthur and Leigh behind him, he fell to 10th by the finish.

John Svensson took Clubman class victory in 11th overall.
