Top European F3 squad Prema Powerteam has confirmed that Eddie Cheever will step up to continental competition with the outfit this season, completing its quartet of drivers.
The son of the ex-Formula 1 racer makes the move from Italian F3, where he finished runner-up last year driving for Prema. He joins fellow Italian Raffaele Marciello, Austrian Lucas Auer and Britain’s Alex Lynn in Prema’s four-car assault on the revamped FIA F3 European Championship.
“I’m very happy and honored to continue with Prema for 2013,” said Cheever, who tested a Ferrari F1 car at the end of last year thanks to his Italian F3 success. “I hope to repeat the successful 2012 results in such a competitive category like the FIA Formula 3 European Championship.”
Team principal Angelo Rosin added: “I’m proud to continue with Eddie. He performed great in the Italian Championship and, at that point, moving to the European series seemed like a logical step in our great partnership. Cheever will be a rookie but since he’s following the same path of Marciello, I’m sure he will impress us too. He has the maturity he needs to make it in this year’s competition.”
