Kaylen Frederick took pole position for the opening race of the BRDC British Formula 3 season at Oulton Park, with Carlin claiming a front-row lockout along with Clement Novalak.
Novalak was the early pacesetter during the 20-minute qualifying session, but just before the halfway point Frederick set a 1m30.564s lap that went unbeaten and earned him pole for the first race of the weekend.
Chris Dittmann Racing’s Ayrton Simmons was third fastest for most of the session but wasn’t able to split the two Carlin drivers in front of him. However, he was able to claim pole on second fastest times for race three, ahead of Fortec Motorsports’ Johnathan Hoggard – who will also start alongside him for race one in fourth.
Ulysse de Pauw beat Douglas Motorsport team-mate and 2018 British Formula 4 champion Kiern Jewiss to fifth on the race one grid, although both will start behind Double R Racing’s Neil Verhagen in race three.
The sole Hillspeed car of Sasakorn Chaimongkol will start eighth for both races, with Lucas Petersson (Carlin) and Manuel Maldonado (Fortec) filling the fifth row of the grid.
