Andreas Estner tops pre-event Euroformula test at Hungaroring

by Ida Wood

Van Amersfoort Racing’s Andreas Estner set the pace in testing ahead of the Euroformula Open season opener at the Hungaroring.

The German set his best lap in the longer morning session, with ex-Renault Formula 1 junior Yifei Ye a close second.

Ye, driving for Motopark’s Japanese offshoot CryptoTower Racing Team, improved on his lap in the afternoon but still came 0.094 seconds short of former FIA Formula 3 Championship rival Estner.

Reigning British Formula 4 champion Zane Maloney also upped his pace in the afternoon and ended up 0.306s adrift in third.

There was a significant gap back to Estner’s VAR team-mates Alexandre Bardinon and Sebastian Estner (his brother) in fourth and fifth, with Ayrton Simmons going sixth fastest in the lone Double R Racing car.

Motopark duo Manuel Maldonado and Niklas Krutten were closely matched in seventh and eighth, and were the last drivers within a second of the pace.

There were 13 cars on track at the test, with Motopark having brought a third chassis for its main team but without a driver to fill it.
