Third year driver Ayrton Simmons took the first pole of the 2018 British Formula 4 season at Brands Hatch, just edging rookie Kiern Jewiss.
Ginetta Junior graduate Jewiss set the pace for much of the session, before a flurry of late laps reshuffled the order and left JHR Developments man Simmons on pole, by 0.031 seconds.
Rookies filled the next three positions, with Arden’s Red Bull junior Dennis Hauger, Double R’s Paavo Tonteri and Hauger’s team-mate Seb Priaulx completing the top five.
Johnathan Hoggard sank down the order to a dissapointing fifth at the end, with the Fortec Motorsports man having been in the top two for most of qualifying.
Jack Doohan and Patrik Pasma, both driving for Arden, were seventh and eighth, with JHR Developments’ karting graduate Josh Skelton putting in an impressive lap to beat 2017 British F4 Challenge Cup champion Hampus Ericsson.
