Pietro Fittipaldi returns to Super Formula with Motopark

by Ida Wood

Haas Formula 1 tester will race for B-MAX Racing with Motopark in Super Formula this year as he pursues the FIA superlicence points required to race in F1.

The 23-year-old won the World Series Formula V8 3.5 title in 2017, and was set to race full-time in SF last year for Team LeMans.

A crash in the World Endurance Championship that broke both of his legs meant he only completed one race of his SF programme, but was still able to enter six of the seven IndyCar races he was signed to contest with Dale Coyne Racing.

The latter programme included a ninth place finish at Portland, but Fittipaldi chose to switch to the DTM with Audi in 2019 to supplement his F1 test and simulator duties rather than continue in IndyCar.

?I am very happy to have signed with B-MAX Racing with Motopark in Super Formula, one of the fastest categories in the world,” Fittipaldi said.

“It’s a very competitive championship, so I need to stay very active over the next few months and I’m sure we’ll be able to have a good 2020 season.”

To prepare for his SF return, and to gain more superlicene points, Fittipaldi will race in Asian Formula 3 with Pinnacle Motorsport over the winter.

Motopark started a collaboration with B-MAX at the start of this year, which resulted in a dominant Japanese F3 title win for Sacha Fenestraz and two podiums in SF with Red Bull junior Lucas Auer and Harrison Newey.

It is set to continue with two cars in SF in 2020, and ran Formula Renault Eurocup race-winner Charles Milesi alongside Auer in the recent Suzuka rookie test.

Motopark team principal Timo Rumpfkeil commented: ?I am very happy to welcome Pietro to our Super Formula team.

“I have been following his results for many years and my feedback is very positive from him. So I’m sure Pietro will be a strong contender for the 2020 Super Formula season.

“For us as a team it is our second season in the category and now we can achieve very good results. It was great to have Pietro’s early confirmation of arrival too.?We now have more time to prepare for the 2020 season in the best way possible. ?
