Tommy Smith will remain with Van Amersfoort Racing for a second season in FIA Formula 3, after coming 27th in the championship this year.

The 21-year-old Australian had a best finish of 12th in his rookie season, and he also finished 14th in the FIA F3 World Cup-awarding Macau Grand Prix.

“Continuing with VAR for another year is an incredible opportunity,” says Smith. “The team and I have had a great partnership so far, and I cannot wait to see what 2024 brings us. I’m eagerly waiting for the challenges ahead, and ready to give it my all for a great second season in FIA F3.”

Smith made his car racing debut in Formula Ford in New Zealand back in 2017, and went on to compete in Australian Formula 4, claiming a handful of top-five finishes over two years.

In 2019 he stepped up to Formula Regional, doing two seasons in the Asian championship before switching to the European Championship in 2021. Having failed to score there, Smith stepped down mid-year to GB3, and stayed in it full-time for 2022 with Douglas Motorsport. He came 19th in the standings, winning the reversed-grid Spa-Francorchamp race and finishing second in the reversed-grid Oulton Park race.

Rob Niessink, VAR’s CEO, commented: “Tommy is a great character to work with and we’re thrilled to extend our partnership for another season. With his rookie season behind him, 2024 will be the year where he can put his experience in the championship to use. We’re excited to see how he will perform next year.’’
