Tommy Smith will step up from FIA Formula 3 to Indy Nxt year, joining HMD Motorsports’ line-up.
The 22-year-old Australian raced in the FIA F3 Championship for two seasons with Van Amersfoort Racing, and a fourth place in this year’s Silverstone feature race helped put him 20th in the standings and was also his only F3 points finish.
He finished 14th in the 2023 Macau Grand Prix, and previously spent a lot of time racing in the Asia-Pacific region. Smith started off in New Zealand Formula Ford, progressed to Australian Formula 4, the Toyota Racing Series and then Formula Regional Asian Championship. Two sixth places were his best finishes there.
In 2021 he relocated his career to Europe, with a points-free FRegional European Championship campaign followed by a GB3 season in which he took a win and a second place but languished down in 19th in the standings.
“I am excited to compete in America and am up for the challenge,” said Smith of his next career move.
“It was a great opportunity to watch the final Indy Nxt race in Nashville with HMD. The series is competitive, and racing on ovals will be a new experience for me, but I’m excited to get behind the wheel for post-season testing later this month and start working with the team as we prepare for the 2025 season together.”
Smith is HMD’s third Indy Nxt signing for 2025, along with Caio Collet and Josh Pierson.
“It is great to finally announce Tommy as part of the HMD Motorsports programme,” commented HMD’s president Mike Maurini.
“We are excited to have him aboard, and he is ready to work. I had the opportunity to work with his management team over the past few months and with Tommy directly in Nashville, and they are all a great group of people. They will be a welcomed addition to HMD Motorsports.”
