Sochi added to Formula 2’s 2020 calendar

by Ida Wood

The 2020 Formula 2 calendar has grown back up to 10 rounds with the addition of a Russian Grand Prix support slot in Sochi.

The September 25-27 event will be the 10th and final round of the season at present, although further additions are expected to be made with Bahrain and Abu Dhabi for later in the year – although neither of those venues have been confirmed for use by Formula 1 yet.

Reaching the 10-round mark was an important target for F2 in its coronavirus-hit calendar recovery, as it means it meets the requirements for its FIA Championship status. F2’s original calendar for this year ran to 12 rounds.

“This announcement is a very good news,” said Bruno Michel, the CEO of F2.

“First of all, it means that we now have ten rounds confirmed for 2020. That’s very positive for everyone involved in the championship.

“Moreover, we currently have three Russian drivers on the grid, with Robert Shwartzman currently leading in the standings. For this reason as well, it’s great to be bringing F2 to Sochi.”

Sochi has been a mainstay on the GP2/F2 calendar since it first hosted the Russian GP in 2014. Fellow F1 support GP3 and its successor FIA Formula 3 Championship have also visited, but will not do so this year as it will run a eight-round season that concludes at new addition Mugello.
