Sebastian Montoya signs with Prema Formula 2 squad for 2025

by Peter Allen

Sebastian Montoya will race for Prema’s Formula 2 team when he steps up to the series in 2025.

The son of Juan Pablo Montoya returns to the team with which he spent the first three years of his single-seater career. He finished 11th and then fourth in two seasons in the Italian Formula 4 championship, scoring nine podiums in his second year.

He then stepped up to Formula Regional, initially in the Middle East (then Asian) series where he took three poles and two wins from three rounds, but the European championship proved more difficult and he ended up 13th in the points without a podium to his name.

Montoya moved on up to FIA Formula 3 in 2023 with Hitech and finished 16th in the points with one podium, and had a similar second campaign with Campos, which he finished 17th in the championship, again with one podium.

“It’s great to be working with Sebastian again,” said Prema boss Rene Rosin.

“We really enjoyed the collaboration in Formula 4 and Formula Regional, and heading into the 2025 FIA Formula 2 Championship, we are sure there is good potential to be put to fruition. The step to F2 is never easy, but we are determined to prepare well together at home and in testing and build on that.”

Montoya, who remains a Red Bull athlete after racing as a member of its Junior Team in 2023, will be team-mate to Gabriele Mini.

“I’m very excited to join Prema for the 2025 FIA Formula 2 season,” he said. “It was the first team I worked with and that makes it very cool to see how they evolved. It is one of the best teams in feeder series racing and now in the world. I’m delighted to join forces with them again and cannot wait to get started.”
