Steijn Schothorst took pole position for the Formula Renault 2.0 NEC round’s race one at Assen, topping the 15-minute Group B session with a late gasp lap that allowed him to beat the previous group’s benchmark.
In Group A, it was his teammate Dennis Olsen who reigned supreme, after a session-long battle between him, Raoul Owens and Nicolas Jamin for pole. Eventually, Olsen prevailed, with a 1:38.249 lap. Owens was second in-group, ahead of Fortec’s Jack Aitken, who joined the track late in the session. Jamin ended up in fourth, with Louis Deletraz closing out the top five.
For the second group, Matt Parry seemed to be the obvious frontrunner, setting the pace early on. However, in the latter stages of the session, Schothorst surprised the field with a session-topping time and then followed it up with a lap that was quicker than Olsen’s Group A effort, securing pole position for himself.
Parry wound up second, ahead of ART’s new man Alberto di Folco, as Yu Kanamaru rounded out the top five for KTR.
