Rafael Villagomez will continue to race in Formula 2 with Van Amersfoort Racing for a second season in 2025.
The Mexican driver will be entering his fifth year with the Dutch team, after his backers helped facilitate its expansion into F2 and FIA Formula 3 in 2022.
After two years in F3 with the team, when he twice finished 25th in the standings, he stepped up to F2 last season and scored points on four occasions, putting 24th in the championship, with a seventh place in the Melbourne feature race his best result.
Villagomez describes this season as an “important year for myself and the team”.
“Towards the end of the year things started to shape up better so I’m looking forward to carry on,” he said. “A lot of work has been done over the winter so I’m looking forward to start testing [in] Barcelona.”
Villagomez has been joined in the team since the final two rounds of the 2024 season by GB3 graduate John Bennett.
Enzo Fittipaldi had been his team-mate for most of last season, winning the feature race in Jeddah, and went on to test with McLaren’s IndyCar team in November. He has now committed to racing outside of single-seaters in 2025 with a deal to race in the LMP2 class of the European Le Mans Series alongside Pipo Derani and Manuel Espirito Santo.
“We’re excited to have Rafa stay with our F2 team for the upcoming season,” said Brad Joyce, VAR team principal.
“He made significant progress last year, and we’re excited to continue working together to further his development. We’re confident he’ll build on his performances and achieve better results.”
