Doriane Pin has been handed a post-race penalty to deny her second F1 Academy victory in Jeddah in favour of Abbi Pulling.
The Prema driver was given a drive-through penalty that was converted into a 20-second penalty for continuing to drive at full speed for another lap after the chequered flag.
The French racer did not realise the race had ended and kept going flat out, crossing the finish line a second time. The red flag was then shown on track in an attempt to make Pin aware of the situation, at which point she slowed accordingly.
It also took some time for her Prema team to realise what was happening, as team members were celebrating the result on the pit-wall.
Pin’s race engineer questioned her over the radio on why she had not slowed down, and she replied “you didn’t tell me [the race was over]”.
Rodin Motorsport’s Pulling inherited the race win and Campos Racing’s Nerea Marti was promoted to the podium. Meanwhile, the Mercedes AMG F1 junior dropped to ninth place, earning three points having set the fastest lap of the race.
Pulling leads the championship after round one as a result, with an 11-point advantage over Prema’s Maya Weug and 14 points ahead of Pin.
Amna Al Qubaisi was also penalised following race two. The MP Motorsport driver received a five-second time penalty for leaving the track and gaining advantage in his battle for position with ART Grand Prix’s Aurelia Nobels. She exceeded track limits and turn 22 and cut the inside of turn 23 to drive past her rival. She was demoted from sixth to eighth place in the final classification of the race.
