Middlehurst completes Thruxton hat-trick with two Sunday wins

Chris Middlehurst continued to boss the Protyre Formula Renault field at Thruxton, adding two wins on Sunday to his prior victory the day before.

The 18-year-old Briton started race two from pole, but was demoted to third on the opening lap by Weiron Tan and Ivan Taranov. He found himself embroiled in a lengthy battle with the two, ultimately settling in behind the Caterham junior. Having led for most of the race, Tan was set to take the win, despite being unable to open up a gap due to two safety car periods, when he was passed by Middlehurst on the final lap and found himself unable to retaliate.

Jake Cook was involved in a great fighting drive after a lacklustre start, ultimately finishing third ahead of Joe Ghanem and Taranov.

The third race of the weekend saw the same drivers on the podium, but was, all in all, a much calmer affair. Middlehurst, having started from pole, managed to establish a gap mid-race while his opponents were embroiled in a fight for second. Ultimately, it was Tan who prevailed, with Cook making another appearance on the podium. Taranov was initially fourth, but found himself excluded from the race following a victory lap incident. As such, Matias Galetto inherited the place, with Martin Cao rounding out the top five.

In the standings, Middlehurst leads Cook by 96 points after three rounds, with Jorge Cevallos in third and Tan in fourth.
