Mick Schumacher will continue with Prema when he steps up to Formula 2 next season.

Schumacher took the European F3 title with Prema in his second year in the category in 2018, shooting to the top of the standings with a run of five consecutive wins towards the end of the campaign.

The son of seven-time Formula 1 champion Michael will get his first taste of F2 machinery with Prema in this week’s Abu Dhabi test.

“I’m really looking forward to contesting my next season with Prema in FIA Formula 2 – a logical step on my sporting path in my view, because I want to further improve my technical experience and driving skills,” he said.

“For me, it was very clear to go into Formula 2 with Prema. I can’t thank the Prema family enough for what we achieved together as a team, especially this year, how we continued to develop together. I?m also really excited to drive the Formula 2 tests in Abu Dhabi.”

Prema took Pierre Gasly and Charles Leclerc to GP2/F2 titles in its first two seasons in the series, before the new F2 2018 car was introduced this year and it finished fifth in the teams’ standings.

“We are proud to welcome Mick to our Formula 2 operation for 2019,” said team boss Rene Rosin.

“He is an extremely talented and dedicated racer, working with him is a pleasure and we can’t wait to begin this adventure together.

“This championship is not an easy one due to its learning curve for rookies especially with the introduction of the new car, but we think that Mick has the maturity and skills needed to make it.

“We are excited for the start of the next chapter in his career and we are happy to be part of it.”

Nyck de Vries finished fourth in the 2018 F2 standings for Prema but is set to switch to ART to be Nikita Mazepin’s team-mate.

Sean Gelael ended up 15th in the team’s other car and has said he is likely to stay with Prema for a second year.
