Matteo Nannini will spend his second year in single-seaters in FIA Formula 3 Championship after signing to race for Jenzer Motorsport.
The 16-year-old made his car racing debut at the start of 2019 in Formula 4 United Arab Emirates, and won seven races on the way to the title.
“I am very excited to move to the FIA Formula 3 Championship,” said Nannini.
“I have done a pre-season testing with Jenzer Motorsport and I am happy to continue my racing career with this great team.”
Nannini’s testing programme has included track time in GP3 cars, which preceded FIA F3 on the Formula 1 support bill.
I know the level of the series is highly-competitive. Most of the circuits are new for me. But I feel pretty confident to do well.?
Xcel Motorsport, which ran Nannini to the UAE title, also entered the Italian in Spanish F4. The nephew of Formula 1 race-winner Alessandro Nannini left after one round to race in regional F3, but was initially too young to score points.
With the underdog Scuderia DF Corse by Corbetta team he finished 13th in Formula Regional European Championship, and finished fifth from third on the grid in his Formula Renault Eurocup debut with MP Motorsport in Abu Dhabi.
“Working with Matteo in testing showed us his big potential,” Jenzer’s team principal Andreas Jenzer said.
“We are very pleased to have him in our FIA F3 team and are looking forward to a great season together.”
Jenzer has also signed Euroformula graduate Calan Williams for the upcoming FIA F3 season, and looks likely to retain Andreas Estner. The German raced for Jenzer in FIA F3 and the Macau Grand Prix last year.
