British Caterham-backed youngster Matt Parry beat current series champion Jake Dennis to pole in the opening round of the Formula Renault 2.0 NEC at Hockenheim.
With qualifying split into two groups, category debutant Parry set the quickest time in Group B. His time of 1m37.338s was 0.014s better than his compatriot and Fortec teammate Dennis’ quickest time in Group A.
Esteban Ocon, who topped the opening practice session, will line up third behind Dennis, while Jack Aitken will make it three Brits in the top four.
Fortec drivers Mikko Pakari and Shahaan Engineer took fifth and seventh respectively, with ADAC Formel Masters vice-champion Gustav Malja lining up between them.
The top ten will be rounded out by RSF-backed Oliver Rowland, who will line up behind Andrea Pizzitola and Steijn Schothorst.
