Johnathan Hoggard wins Aston Martin Autosport BRDC Award

by Ida Wood

BRDC British Formula 3 race-winner Johnathan Hoggard has been announced as the winner of the 2019 Aston Martin Autosport BRDC Award.

Hoggard, who won seven races and was title runner-up in his rookie British F3 season, beat Japanese F3’s Enaam Ahmed, W Series and MRF Challenge champion Jamie Chadwick and British F3 rival Ayrton Simmons to the coveted award.

“I’m over the moon! I’m lost for words,” said the 19-year-old.

“I’ve been waiting for over a month for this and it’s been agonising.

“I’m thankful for everyone who’s helped along the way, family, sponsors, judges and the organisers.

“I knew it was very tough competition and it’s amazing [to have won].”

Prior to joining Fortec Motorsports in British F3, Hoggard spent a season-and-a-half with the team in British Formula 4, winning a total of eight races and finishing third in the 2018 standings.

The winner was determined by fitness and simulator tests at Red Bull Racing Formula 1 team, and a two-day track test at Silverstone in a MotorSport Vision Formula Two car, Ligier LMP3 and Garage 59-run Aston Martin Vantage GT3 racer.

This year’s prize package is the biggest in the award’s history, with Hoggard receiving ?200,000 and test drives in a Red Bull F1 car and the Aston Martin Vantage GTE car used in the World Endurance Championship.

The judging panel for the award included ex-F1 driver and BRDC vice-president Derek Warwick, Aston Martin factory driver Darren Turner, BMW Andretti Formula E driver Alexander Sims and British Touring Car champion Jason Plato.
