Gamer-turned-racer Jann Mardenborough could line up in British Formula 3 after some impressive tests with top squad Carlin, according to Autosport.
The 21-year-old Welshman won the GT Academy initiative run by Nissan and PlayStation in 2011 and came close to winning the British GT title this season. He has joined the entry list for the upcoming Toyota Racing Series in the new year with the ETEC Motorsport team, and is now being linked to a full-time switch to single-seaters.
He has recently been testing with crack F3 outfit Carlin at Oulton Park, Barcelona and Valencia – reportedly in preparation for a planned step up to LMP2 machinery – and has impressed the team’s renowned boss, Trevor Carlin.
“We haven?t had lots of comparisons as he?s run in some dodgy conditions, but he?s been incredible,” Carlin is quoted as saying. “It?s quite staggering. He would make a very good single-seater driver if they [Nissan] decide on that path.”
In the meantime, Mardenborough will join Formula Renault racer Tanart Sathienthirakul, F3 Open driver Tatiana Calderon, JK Racing Asia Series and Formula Pilota China man Akash Nandy and Singaporean karting graduate Andrew Tang in ETEC’s lineup in New Zealand.
