Rain halts Formula Regional European Championship at Vallelunga

by Ida Wood

Worsening weather conditions at Vallelunga in Italy have led to the third Formula Regional European Championship race of the weekend to be suspended after less than two laps.

A delayed start behind the safety car took place, with Isac Blomqvist starting from pole, but on the second lap rather than the cars being released to race they were led back into the pits.

The safety car returned to the track on several occasions to survey the conditions, with race director Alessandro Ferrari and Minardi Formula 1 team founder Giancarlo Minardi on board, and circuit marshals also braved the elements to sweep off as much standing water as they could.

When rain returned after the first scheduled restart it made the race continuing seem unlikely, and further stronger showers left a river of water flowing down the pit straight. Race control eventually chose to suspend the race, with the intention of adding a fourth race to a later round in the season.
