Frederik Vesti reclaims FREC lead with victory at wet Vallelunga

by Ida Wood

Frederik Vesti reclaimed the lead of the Formula Regional European Championship with victory over Prema team-mate Enzo Fittipaldi in mixed conditions at Vallelunga.

The second race of the weekend started off wet, with two laps taking place behind the safety car before the field was set free. Fittipaldi immediately started attacking Kart In Club Motorsport’s poleman Isac Blomqvist, but his aggressiveness actually led to him losing second to Vesti.

It didn’t take long for Fittipaldi to reclaim the position,? but it took almost half of the race until the Ferrari Driver Academy member could find way a past Blomqvist. Vesti only took a few corners to also get past the longtime leader, and he continued on the tail of his team-mate.

After two laps of applying pressure, Fittipaldi was forced into a mistake by Vesti but the Brazilian was able to hold onto the lead despite going off track. One lap later Vesti was past though, with Fittipaldi’s wet tyres starting to overheat as the track dried.

Once he conceded the position he quickly fell into the clutches of the third Prema car of Olli Caldwell, who almost got alongside Fittipaldi at the final corner of the race. Victory for Vesti means he moves back into the championship lead by six points.

Blomqvist continued his fall down the order, especially when a light shower hit the track again at the end of the race, taking sixth behind Van Amersfoort Racing pair Joey Mawson and Sophia Floersch. Despite being overtaken by Floersch late on and failing to then find a way past Blomqvist, race one winner David Schumacher is still third in the standings for US Racing.

His team-mate Marcos Siebert was the only driver to start the race on slick tyres, and was classified five laps down.
