Russian young star Sergey Sirotkin will make the step up to Formula Renault 3.5 next year, with Czech squad ISR revealing they will be running him in a full-time campaign for 2013.
Sirotkin tested with the squad for the majority of the post-season tests ? one day at Barcelona and two at Aragon, to be precise. Before that he was linked to a number of teams in the category, and entered this year’s race at Moscow Raceway with BVM Target.
Ultimately, however, Sirotkin seems pretty happy with the reslting decision: “ISR has shown many times that it is an excellent place for a driver to work for his career, and I intend to make the most of this opportunity.”
ISR boss Igor Salaquarda spoke of his new signing with similar enthusiasm: “We had a few opportunities to test Sergey during the winter and he was part of our shortlist for 2013.
“Despite his very young age he already has some good experience with powerful cars with interesting results. The team has been impressed after these tests and both parties agreed quickly for 2013.”
2012 has been a decent year for ISR with them taking fourth in the teams standings in FR3.5 and helping Sam Bird to third in the overall standings at the end of the year. As for Sirotkin, it was a year where he unexpectedly shone in the Auto GP World Series, quickly mastering the highly-powerful machinery and finishing third at the end of the year with two wins to his name.
