It’s been announced today that ex-Star Mazda and F3 Open racer Tatiana Calderon will join Double R Racing in their switch to the European F3 category, lining up alongside Sean Gelael and Antonio Giovinazzi.
The latter pair of drivers were previously announced to race in British F3, but, due to the series shrinking to just four rounds in 2013, Double R made the decision to move to the main F3 series.
Calderon, despite being 19, is already very experienced in single-seater racing, having contested the Star Mazda series as part of Road to IndyCar in 2010 and 2011, finishing tenth and sixth in the standings respectively with two podiums overall.
In 2012, she joined Emilio de Villota’s team for a campaign in the European F3 Open, finishing 9th with a personal best finish of fourth at Hungaroring. Earlier this year, Calderon contested the Toyota Racing Series over in New Zealand with ETEC Motorsport, finishing in twelfth in a very tight, competitive field.
“We?re delighted that Antonio, Sean and Tatiana are making the step into European competition with Double R”, commented team principal Anthony Hieatt, ?We have raced on the Hankook tyres before, so we know what to expect where they?re concerned. Although there are some highly experienced drivers in European F3 this year, our three are very promising and could well spring together some surprises. Testing so far has gone well, we?ve had some good running at Pembrey, so now we can?t wait for the season to get underway”.
Last year, Double R focused on British F3, where they fielded Geoff Uhrhane and Fahmi Ilyas in the main class for the majority of the season (with Ilyas replaced by Rupert Svendsen-Cook for the final round), while also running Duvashen Padayachee in the National class. Ilyas and Uhrhane rounded out the main class full-time standings in 11th and 12th.
