British Formula 4 runner-up Matias Zagazeta will step up to Formula Regional European Championship for 2022 with G4 Racing.

The Peruvian spent two years in British F4, with his rookie season including a best finish of fifth, two rookie classification wins and 12th in the overall standings.

Moving from Carlin to Argenti Motorsport for 2021 improved his form, with four wins and four poles carrying him to second place in the championship.

“I am so excited to announce that I will be racing in Formula Regional European Championship together with G4 Racing,” Zagazeta said. “I can’t wait to get started with this new challenge and chase some fantastic results together.

“Forever grateful to Infinity Sports Management and my family for making it happen. And massive thanks to everyone for your incredible support.”

The 18-year-old joined G4 for FREC’s post-season test at Monza, but then evaluated several other teams over the winter.

He drove for R-ace GP for the next test at the Red Bull Ring, then for Trident at Barcelona and ART Grand Prix at Paul Ricard. At Mugello he then was part of British team Arden’s line-up, and in mid-December there was an open single-seater test at Barcelona where Zagazeta got to sample one of Prema’s FREC cars.

In the end he signed for Swiss outfit G4, and is its first confirmed driver for 2022 although it is understood a second driver has already been signed. It now means 10 of FREC’s 12 teams have announced part of or all of their line-up for the upcoming season which begins at Monza on April 22-24.
