Formula Renault 2.0 NEC and Panam GP regular Alfonso Celis, Jr. will join Fortec Motorsports for select rounds in European F3 and British F3, Autosport has revealed.
The 16-year-old Mexican will contest two rounds of European F3 ? the eighth race weekend of the year at Zandvoort as well as the season finale at Hockenheim. As for the British F3 series, Celis will race in the final round of the year at Nurburgring, joining Will Buller, Felipe Guimaraes and a yet unnamed fourth driver of the Fortec lineup.
“The idea is to get him some track knowledge. He hasn’t done much single-seater racing and he feels he’s missing out”, stated Fortec manager Andi Scott. “It doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll do F3 next season. He could stay in Formula Renault.”
Having graduated from the Formula BMW Talent Cup last year, Celis has had a somewhat busy 2013. He kicked the year off participating in the Panam GP Winter Series, where he took third overall. He currently sits fifth in the main series standings. In his full-time campaign in Formula Renault 2.0 with Fortec, Celis is currently occupying 12th after 11 races.
