Sami Meguetounif has signed with MP Motorsport as he embarks on a full Formula Regional European Championship season, after contesting the last two rounds of 2021.
The 17-year-old Frenchman’s first FRegional experience came with R-ace GP in FREC’s Mugello and Monza rounds, and he claimed a best finish of 13th.
He then joined the FA Racing team run by MP for post-season testing at the Red Bull Ring, before sampling Arden’s car at Barcelona and then returning to MP’s fold for running at Paul Ricard. At Mugello at Valencia he drove for Trident.
“I’m very pleased to be joining MP for my first full FREC season,” said Meguetounif.
“FREC is an extremely competitive environment, and teaming up with a proven race-winning team will help me make quick progress as I move forward in the season.
“Testing with the team has been a very satisfying experience – we’ve been quick from the off. This has given me the confidence that I’ve made the right decision to go with MP.”
He will be team-mate to Michael Belov, a Russian driver competing as a neutral athlete, with MP’s third driver yet to be announced.
Meguetounif gained further FRegional experience at the start of this year by contesting the final round with Evans GP. He scored points with a seventh place finish, putting him 20th in the championship standings.
“It’s wonderful that Sami will be part of our FREC squad,” MP’s team principal Sander Dorsman said.
“Sami is an exciting talent who has already shown flashes of raw speed in his late-season appearances in the series last year, and we hope to build on that going into the new season. I’m betting on Sami to be among the surprises of 2022.”
Before starting his time in FRegional, Meguetounif spent several years racing in Formula 4. In 2019 he did a round apiece in the French and South East Asian championships, then came fourth in French F4 in 2020 with one win.
Last year he switched to the ADAC and Italian championships with R-ace, coming 11th and 19th in the two series.
