SamaiaBrazilian Formula 3 champion Guilherme Samaia is stepping up to Formula 2 to race alongside Jack Aitken at Campos Racing.

The Brazilian won his home F3 title in 2017, two years after becoming class champion and one year after being overall runner-up, and simultaneously competed in Euroformula Open until a contractual dispute with Teo Martin Motorsport ended his time in the series midway through 2019.

Samaia also ran in BRDC British F3 in 2017 with Double R Racing, which included two podium appearances.

In the eight races he competed in last year with the Spanish team he took a second place finish and a fastest lap, and returned to motorsport in F2’s post-season Abu Dhabi test where he was slowest on two of the three days for Campos.

“Extremely happy to announce that I will be driving the #10 car in the FIA Formula 2 championship for Campos Racing in the 2020 season,” said Samaia.

Campos won three races last year with Aitken, who remains with the team for 2020, although it has lost key team member Jan Sumann ahead of the season. This departure initially put its driver line-up in doubt.

“We are extremely excited to announce our drivers for the upcoming F2 season: Jack Aitken and Guilherme Samaia! Come on!” read Campos’s team statement revealing its line-up.

Three are three vacancies left on the 2020 F2 grid, although reigning Euroformula champion Marino Sato is set to be announced imminently as the second driver for Trident alongside Williams Formula 1 test driver Roy Nissany.

The other two teams with incomplete line-ups are Carlin and MP Motorsport.
