FIA Formula 2 and FIA Formula 3 have unveiled their 2027 calendars, featuring further expansion beyond the series’ traditional European venues.

F2 will add rounds in Mexico City and Istanbul Park, as well as making a return to Montreal, which was added as a replacement for the cancelled Middle East rounds in 2026. The Turkish venue hosted rounds of FIA F2’s predecessor, GP2, from 2005 to 2011, with DAMS’ Romain Grosjean and Trident’s Stefano Coletti winning on GP2’s last appearance there.

As a result, only five of the 14 rounds will take place in Europe, with six in Asia, two in North America and one in Oceania.

F3 will add rounds in Jeddah and Montreal and will conclude its season at Istanbul Park. Like GP2, the GP3 category staged rounds in support of the Turkish Grand Prix in 2010 and 2011. Although FIA F3 in its current guise will be making its first trip across the Atlantic, the short-lived United States F3 Championship raced at Mosport Park and Mont Tremblant in Canada in 2001.

Both championships are scheduled to begin with a Middle Eastern double-header in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia in March, although both events must still be considered provisional, in reality even if not in the championships’ public statements. The two series will share race weekends for the first nine rounds before F2 heads to Baku, with the two coming back together a week later in Istanbul.

As a result of the addition of three new races in each series, the F1 Grands Prix at Spa-Francorchamps and the Hungaroring will lose both their main support races for 2027, potentially opening the way for rounds of the Formula Regional European Championship, which has been looking to add one or two Formula 1-support races, as revealed by Formula Scout recently.

The absence of races in Belgium and Hungary means that both championships will enjoy an extended summer break, stretching from mid-July to early September, with the finale now moved back into October.

Barcelona is the third circuit to drop off the schedule to make way for the three new races, although in this case the decision is due to the circuit dropping off the F1 calendar for 2027. The Algarve circuit near Portimao is another potential venue for a FREC support event, as it has also been omitted from the F2 and F3 calendars, and is thought to be in line to hold a round of FREC in 2027.

F1 Academy is another series that may benefit from additional European rounds following the loss of its traditional Continental home at Zandvoort.

Bruno Michel, the CEO of both championships, expressed his excitement at being able “to add three new venues in a financially sustainable way, with the return of Montreal following its surprise addition in 2026 and the first appearance of Istanbul and Mexico City.

“With a calendar spanning four continents and a carefully distributed sequence of rounds, the 2027 FIA Formula 2 Championship will offer teams and drivers a demanding and diverse season, while bringing the category to new audiences and strengthening its position as a global platform for the next generation of Formula 1 talent.”

Michel went on to describe the F3 calendar as “groundbreaking, with three new venues that represent a formidable challenge for the teams and the drivers. It will be very exciting to see the F3 cars at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit, and I’m extremely pleased to bring F3 to North America for the very first time thanks to the addition of Montreal to the calendar.”

Michel confirmed that Formula Motorsport Ltd, the promoter of both championships, will be covering freight costs to ensure that “the territorial expansion of the calendar does not financially impact our teams.”
