Red Bull junior Zane Maloney picked up two grid penalties for impeding rivals during Formula 2 qualifying at Silverstone.
The Rodin Carlin driver’s first offence was against ART Grand Prix’s Theo Pourchaire, as he held him up through turns 11 and 12. That copped him a three-place grid penalty, and then impeding Virtuosi Racing’s Jack Doohan led to another three-place grid drop.
Having qualified seventh, Maloney would have been set to start fourth for Saturday’s reversed-grid sprint race. However he is now set to start from 10th place on the grid.
Dropping from 14th to 19th on the sprint race grid is MP Motorsport’s Dennis Hauger, who did not abort one of his qualifying laps as is required after he passed through double waved yellow flags at turn four and as a result has been handed a five-place grid penalty and two penalty points (his first of the season) by the F2 stewards.
In FIA Formula 3 there were no grid penalties handed out, although Prema’s Zak O’Sullivan recieved a reprimand for impeding ART GP’s Kaylen Frederick at turn 16 in free practice.
His Prema team-mate Dino Beganovic had to get permission from race control to start the F3 sprint race having not set a representative laptime in qualifying. He was granted permission based on being third fastest in practice, and will start from the very rear of the 30-car field for both races (pending any grid penalties for Sunday’s feature race).
Beganovic’s title rivals fared far better, with runayway points leader Gabriel Bortoleto qualifying fifth and Pepe Marti qualifying third.
