KIC Motorsport has completed its 2023 Formula Regional European Championship line-up by signing Shannon Lugassy.
The 16-year-old Swiss has been racing in single-seaters since 2021, having spent the last two years in the Ultimate Cup Series. He drove in the series’ Formula Renault 2.0 class during his rookie campaign, then stepped up to FRegional for 2022.
With Classic & Modern Racing in FR2.0, Lugassy claimed four poles from five rounds (as he missed one event) and converted his qualifying performances into six wins and five other podiums to finish second in the standings.
He stayed with the team for his second year, becoming team-mate to Formula E race-winner Nicolas Prost, and won on his first weekend in the FRegional car. Five further podium finishes followed and he came fourth in the points.
“I am super excited to announce that I will participate for the 2023 season in FRegional Europe with KIC Motorsport,” said Lugassy.
“I really thank the team for this amazing opportunity and for their trust. FREC is a really competitive championship, a big step in my career. I’m confident that with hard work and determination we’ll get good results. Looking forward to start the year and start racing. I would like to extend my appreciation to my partners to make this dream possible.”
Lugassy will be the most experienced driver in KIC’s line-up, with his two team-mates Iker Oikarinen and Ferrari junior Maya Weug stepping up from Formula 4.
“We’re more than happy to welcome Shannon Lugassy to the KIC Motorsport family,” said KIC’s team manager Peter Flythstrom. “In our season 2023 kick-off days, which were held in Finland, we noticed that we got immediately connected. Therefore the team spirit already is very high.”
