Zane Maloney will represent Barbados in FIA Formula 3 this year, as he steps up to the Formula 1 support series with Trident.
The 18-year-old is entering his fourth year of car racing, having won the British Formula 4 title as a rookie in 2019, then moved up to Euroformula with Carlin in 2020 before stepping down to Formula Regional European Championship for 2021.
He won from pole in Monaco last year with R-ace GP, then joined Trident – the reigning champion team in FIA F3 – for post-season testing and running in old GP3 cars.
“I am proud to debut in the FIA F3 Championship with Trident Motorsport, the queen among the teams in the series,” said Maloney.
“Throughout the last season, I think I have grown as a driver, both in terms of managing the race weekends and in paying attention to every detail. Together with Trident, I want to continue in this direction, and I am sure that there are all the ingredients to do well in the FIA F3 Championship. I can’t wait to get out on track and start this new adventure in an extremely popular and competitive series.”
Maloney will be team-mate to Red Bull junior Jonny Edgar, and the pair are expected to be joined by Roman Stanek in Trident’s line-up.
“We are delighted to welcome Zane to our line-up,” Trident’s team manager Giacomo Ricci said.
“He really stood out in the post-season test at Valencia last November. Zane adapted very quickly to the F3 car, posting competitive results both in terms of performance and long runs.
“A strong bond immediately formed between him and the team, which is proud to have secured a driver with good prospects with whom to compete in a demanding series such as the FIA F3 Championship.”
