Van Amersfoort Racing has confirmed that Sophia Floersch will be part of its FIA Formula 3 Championship line-up in 2024.
Floersch herself shared the news two weeks ago, updating her LinkedIn profile to say she would be racing for VAR next year after joining the team for last month’s FIA F3 World Cup-awarding Macau Grand Prix.
The 23-year-old German is well known to VAR, having made her F3 debut with the team in the European championship back in 2018. She also contested the Macau GP that year, and infamously broke her spine in a horror crash at Lisboa corner.
For 2019 she stepped down to the Formula Regional European Championship with VAR and came seventh in the standings with two fourth places as her best results. She returned to F3 in 2020, spent two years in sportscars then made another category comeback this year with PHM Racing by Charouz, coming 23rd in the FIA F3 Championship with a best finish of seventh.
“I am super excited to be back with VAR, it feels like coming home,” said the Alpine junior. “I have confidence in our ability to progress and deliver strong performances together in the upcoming FIA F3 season.”
Floersch qualified 17th in Macau on her first weekend back competing with VAR, and finished 15th and 11th in the qualification and main race respectively.
VAR’s team principal Frits van Amersfoort said: “Obviously we are very pleased to have Sophia back with us. We did Macau together this year which has been great. We believe that her experience in FIA F3 plus her familiarity with the team can benefit us next season.”
