Ayrton Simmons handled a puddle-filled Silverstone circuit to set the fastest time in BRDC British Formula 3 free practice on Silverstone’s Grand Prix layout.

The Chris Dittmann Racing driver dominated the afternoon session, enough for him to beat Neil Verhagen’s morning benchmark. Second fastest in the afternoon and the only other driver within a second of Simmons was Clement Novalak.

With wet weather consistent throughout the day, it was later in the day when the faster times were set as drivers got more confident with the circuit.

Bar Double R Racing’s Verhagen, the only other exceptions to this were Hillspeed driver Sasakorn Chaimongkol in fifth, Fortec Motorsports’ Johnathan Hoggard in eighth, and Novalak’s Carlin team-mate Kaylen Frederick in 10th.

Kiern Jewiss occupied a lonely spot in fourth, while VdeV Single-Seater Challenge champion Nico Varrone impressed on his debut with Hillspeed, going sixth fastest.

Andreas Estner – the other debutant in the field – was slowest for Lanan Racing, while Jewiss’s team-mate Ulysse De Pauw skipped the morning session
