Robert Megennis’s expected return to Indy Lights next year with Andretti Autosport has been confirmed, after his 2020 campaign with the team was cancelled.
The 20-year-old started his single-seater career in F1600 Championship Series back in 2015, before moving onto the Road to Indy and making his way up the ladder.
He debuted in Indy Lights last year with Andretti, winning a race on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s road course, and was to remain with the team in 2020 before the season was called off during the coronavirus pandemic.
Megennis declared in summer that his 2020 deal would roll over into next year, although the official announcement of that only came this Tuesday (December 22).
“I’m massively excited to be back with Andretti Autosport,” said Megennis.
“We had a great 2019 season together, and I’m excited to take what we learned into 2021. I love this team and I know it’s the right environment for me.
“A big thank you to Andretti Autosport for giving me this opportunity. Time to go win some races.”
Megennis’s team-mates are Kyle Kirkwood and Danial Frost, both drivers who also were supposed to race for Andretti this year, while George Steinbrenner IV has returned to the series to co-run a car with Andretti for Devlin DeFrancesco.
“We are excited to have Robert return to our Andretti Autosport Indy Lights lineup for 2021,” Andretti president J-F Thormann declared.
“In his rookie season in 2019, Robert was a contender all season long and focused on success. He brings great value to the team as a veteran of the series alongside rookie teammates and we are ready to get the season started in St. Petersburg.”
Indy Lights is still yet to reveal its full 2021 calendar, with nine of the 10 rounds with firm dates but one round still yet to be announced.
