British driver successfully defends his season-long points lead at Monza finale to become champion and secure F1 test opportunity…
Luciano Bacheta has become the fourth champion of the FIA Formula Two Championship following a third-place finish in the final race of the season at Monza.
The British driver began the year with double victories at Silverstone and Portimao to quickly open up a healthy points lead. He did only manage one further victory in a half-points race at Spa and was outscored in the second half of the season, but did enough to win the title ahead of 15-year-old sensation Matheo Tuscher.
Bacheta is now entitled to a Williams F1 test as a prize, though with the squad having done their Young Driver Test at Silverstone earlier in the year the details of this were unclear. Bacheta has since said he will be doing the test in two weeks time, which we would anticipate would be a run in an older Williams machine at Silverstone.
Bacheta moved into Formula Two at the end of last year after a tough time in GP3. Previous to that he was runner-up in Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 in his third campaign in the series. It’s not clear what his next move will be, as he doesn’t have the sort of personal backing needed for GP2. “We’ve got a few ideas for 2013 but I don’t want to say too much just yet,” he said after today’s race.
