Campos Racing’s Jules Caranta took pole position for the second Eurocup-3 race of the weekend at the Red Bull Ring.
MP Motorsport’s Mattia Colnaghi had to settle for second, as a late red flag period prevented any improvements in the final minutes, with team-mate Maciej Gladysz making amends for having all of his qualifying laps deleted the previous day by taking third.
Campos and MP drivers occupied nine of the top 10 places, with Global Racing Service’s Yani Stevenheydens the outlier in eighth place.
After Campos duo Ernesto Rivera and Kacper Sztuka and then MP’s Emmo Fittipaldi had briefly taken turns at the front, Colnaghi assumed top spot with 10 minutes remaining by setting a 1m25.014s. Caranta was just 0.014 seconds back in second, and Rivera was third.
With just over six minutes to go, Caranta posted a 1m24.913s which would was the first and ended up being the only sub-1m25s lap of Q2. Gladysz moved up to third, and Sztuka also improved in fourth.
Red flags appeared stopped the clock with just over three minutes left, due to an incident for Allay Racing’s Linus Hellberg.
Caranta and Rivera chose to sit out the action once qualifying restarted, a risk that paid off since their rivals were unable to improve. Rivera held onto fifth and Campos’s Jesse Carrasquedo Jr, another to have all of his Q1 laps deleted for track limits abuse, qualified sixth. Three quarters of a second covered the top 15.
Drivex School’s Alessandro Famularo suffered that fate in Q2, after setting 12 laps in total.
