The first feature race of the 2025 Formula 2 season in Melboune has been cancelled due to extreme wet weather.
There were two attempts to get Sunday’s race underway, but the ongoing wet conditions prevented any green flag action from occurring.
The formation lap was delayed by 10 minutes at first due to an issue concerning MP Motorsport’s Richard Verschoor. He was told by the team he would have to start from the pitlane or face a penalty in the race.
The opportunity to take either option would never come though. After circulating behind the safety car for a number of laps, red flags waved and the field returned to the pits.
As the field headed back in, Rodin Motorsport’s Alex Dunne stopped at the pit entrance. He was unable to get his car going again and had to be pushed down the pitlane.
An extensive delay would follow, before rae officials attempted to get the race running again. The field filed out behind the safety car for another formation lap, and were told the race would be shortened to 12 laps but would still feature a compulsory pit stop, but conditions had not improved.
MP’s Oliver Goethe spun in the wet. He managed to get going again without assistance but red flags waved a few moments later.
There would be no third attempt to get the race underway, not only due to the weather but as preparations for Formula 1’s Australian Grand Prix needed to begin to ensure that race was not delayed and risked finishing after dusk.
When red flags had waved on F2 a second time, and despite the start not actually taking place, there were less than 15 minutes remaining of F2’s race clock.
