Campos Racing has completed its 2024 FIA Formula 3 Championship line-up with the signing of Sebastian Montoya.
The 18-year-old Colombian, son of former Formula 1 and IndyCar driver Juan Pablo Montoya, spent the first three years of his single-seater career with Prema, then raced for Hitech GP in his rookie FIA F3 season this year.
He came 11th in Italian Formula 4 as a car racing rookie, then improved to fourth in his sophomore campaign. Last year he won two races en route to seventh in the standings as a part-timer in the Formula Regional Asian Championship, and came 13th in the European championship.
Montoya scored seven points in a FIA F3 cameo with Campos, and when he made the full-time step up this year with Hitech he made the podium in Melbourne and got a fastest lap in Monaco but was not a big points scorer and ended up 16th in the standings. He returned to Campos to contest the FIA F3 World Cup-awarding Macau Grand Prix.
“I’m delighted to return to Campos Racing for this new season of FIA F3. To be honest, since my return to the team we have had a great learning curve during the collective tests,” said Montoya.
“Although Macau did not give us the results we wanted, the potential is there and the important thing is to be able to maximize our options. We know that we have a competitive car, enough to be in the points regularly and hopefully with it we can also fight for podiums and wins.”
Montoya will be team-mate to fellow Red Bull-backed driver Oliver Goethe and Mari Boya.
“It’s fantastic to be able to welcome Sebastian to Campos for next year. He is a very talented driver, as he showed when he debuted with us in FIA F3 finishing in the points twice, and we will work as hard as possible so that he can demonstrate his true potential,” said Campos’s team principal Adrian Campos Jr.
“Sebastian already made a great impression on us in the post-season tests and the best of his sporting career is yet to come. Sebastian, Oliver and Mari are three young drivers, but at the same time they have extensive experience in FIA F3. Without a doubt, 2024 promises to be exciting for Campos Racing.”
