James Calado started the 2013 GP2 Series season the way he is expected to finish it, with first place in practice in Malaysia.
The British driver posted a best time of 1m45.403s, taking top spot just ten minutes into the 30 minute session. Simon Trummer was an impressive second for Rapax to back up his pre-season pace, just 0.019s behind Calado.
Tom Dillmann took third for series newcomers Russian Time, ahead of debutant and GP3 champion Mitch Evans. Marcus Ericsson was fifth, Felipe Nar sixth and Johnny Cecotto seventh.
Stefano Coletti was eighth, Rio Haryanto ninth and Stephane Richelmi tenth.
Qualifying takes place at 15:55 local time, or 07:55 GMT.
