Luke Browning will take the place of fellow Briton and Williams Formula 1 junior Zak O’Sullivan in ART Grand Prix’s line-up for the remainder of the Formula 2 season.
O’Sullivan announced on Monday that a funding issue had brought an end to his rookie campaign with three rounds to go, with the 19-year-old down in 13th in the standings but still mathematically in title contention having won the feature race in Monaco and the sprint race at Spa-Francorchamps.
ART GP has had to move fast to find a replacement driver, with F2 back in action this weekend in Baku. There is then a break of a month-and-a-half before the penultimate round at Losail, with the season concluding at Yas Marina Circuit the week after.
Browning, 22, came third in this year’s FIA Formula 3 Championship with Hitech GP with two victories and two poles, and as a rookie in 2023 was 15th in the standings but did win the FIA World Cup-awarding Macau Grand Prix.
He joined the F1 support paddock after starring on the British single-seater scene, winning his home Formula 4 championship in 2020 and the GB3 title two years later. Browning has raced exclusively for Hitech GP since the start of 2022, but has experience of European teams having driven for German outfit US Racing when he came third in ADAC F4 in 2021.
For 2025 he is targeting a full-time step up to F2 and increased F1 work with Williams. He was full of praise for the team’s decision to recently promote fellow junior Franco Colapinto from F2 to an F1 seat.
